What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy, involves using a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate collagen and elastin production, two essential proteins that keep our skin looking youthful, plump, and radiant. The body's natural healing process repairs the micro-injuries by creating new tissue, leaving behind smoother, firmer, and more even-toned skin.

At Pure Medispa, we use the SkinPen, an FDA-cleared microneedling device that is safe and effective for all skin types. The SkinPen creates micro-injuries at a precise depth, ensuring maximum collagen production without causing any damage to the surface of the skin.

The Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling offers numerous benefits for those looking to improve the appearance of their skin. Here are just a few:

  • Reduced Wrinkles and Fine Lines: As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling helps stimulate collagen production, which improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of these signs of aging.
  • Improved Texture and Tone: Microneedling helps improve skin texture and tone, diminishing the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars,  stretch marks, enlarged pores, and uneven skin.
  • Reduced Hyperpigmentation: The controlled micro-injuries created during microneedling can help break up excess melanin in the skin, reducing hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage or acne scarring.
  • Increased Product Absorption: Microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin, allowing skincare products to penetrate deeper and be more effective.
  • Safe for All Skin Types: Microneedling is safe for all skin types and can be used on sensitive areas, such as around the eyes and lips.

What To Expect During a Microneedling Session

  1. Consultation: Before your microneedling session, you will have a consultation with Dr. McKenna to discuss your skin concerns and goals.
  2. Preparation: The esthetician will thoroughly cleanse your skin and apply a numbing cream to minimize discomfort during the treatment.
  3. Microneedling: The esthetician will use a sterile, SkinPen microneedling device to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin's surface. The depth of the needles can be adjusted according to your specific needs.
  4. Serums and Masks: After the microneedling is completed, specialized serums and masks may be applied to enhance the skin's healing process and provide additional nourishment.
  5. Recovery:  You may experience slight redness and sensitivity immediately after the session, but it is normal. It should subside within 18 hours as the surface-level micro-injuries heal, allowing you to resume normal skincare. Your skin may also feel slightly rough for a couple of days as it heals.

The process typically takes 30-60 minutes, and most clients report little to no discomfort during the treatment. You may need multiple sessions for optimal results, which will be discussed during your consultation.

Microneedling Aftercare

To ensure maximum benefits from your microneedling treatment, Dr. McKenna recommends the following aftercare tips:

  • Avoiding Sun Exposure: It is crucial to avoid direct sun exposure for 24 to 48 hours after your treatment as the skin will be more sensitive to UV rays.
  • Using Gentle Cleansers: Use gentle cleansers and avoid harsh skincare products for the first few days after microneedling.
  • Moisturizing Regularly: Keeping your skin hydrated with a moisturizer is essential for proper healing.
  • Avoiding Makeup: It is best to avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours after your treatment.

Is Microneedling Right For Me?

Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment option for all skin types, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Those with active acne or skin infections should avoid microneedling until their condition has cleared. Additionally, those with a history of scarring or keloids may not be good candidates for this procedure. It's best to consult Dr. McKenna to determine if microneedling is the right choice for you.
